Types of surgeries
There are several types of laser vision correction. Visiting Dr. Orwa Nasser's clinic for a suitability examination will help you understand the different types and check if you are suitable for laser eyeglass removal surgery. Dr. Nasser will help you choose the surgery that is most suitable for you, based on the type and severity of your vision problem, eye health, corneal thickness, personal and family history, work, habits, hobbies and expectations.
Femto-Second LASIK: In femto-LASIK surgery, a very thin layer of the outer corneal surface is designed using a femto laser and partially separated without completely separating it, so it remains connected to the rest of the cornea at one of its edges. Next, the laser is applied to the cornea to reshape its topography and then the thin layer is put back in place. Dr. Nasser does not use any surgical knife or blade to perform the surgery. Instead, he uses a femto laser to remove that layer of the cornea. The advantages of the femto laser are: very fast recovery (within 24 hours), high precision, precise control, excellent results, no pain and short-term use of drops after surgery. There may be some sensitivity to light for a few days.
SMILE procedure: In the SMILE procedure, a very thin disc-shaped layer of the cornea is created by the femto laser without the use of surgical knives or blades. The disc is then removed from inside the cornea through a small incision. The small incision is in the shape of a smiley face, which is why the procedure is called SMILE. Dr. Nasser does not use any knife or needle to perform the surgery. Instead, he uses a femto laser to create the disc and the small incision. There are many advantages to the SMILE procedure such as very fast recovery (within 24 hours), high precision, precise control and excellent results, no pain and short-term use of eye drops after surgery. There may be very little light sensitivity and discomfort.
PRK and Trans-PRK: In PRK and Trans-PRK, a laser is used to redesign the topography of the cornea, but no partial layer of the cornea is removed or a disc is formed. Instead, in PRK, the outer corneal tissue is removed to allow the laser to reach the inside of the cornea. In Trans-PRK, the outer corneal tissue is not removed and the laser is applied directly to the corneal lining, but the outer corneal tissue is removed at the end of the procedure. This tissue will grow back within three to five days on average. For this reason, and because it takes about a week for the outer corneal tissue to heal completely, the patient may feel pain, excessive tearing of the eyes, sensitivity to light and blurred vision during the first week. In addition, there is a treatment period that includes the use of eye drops for several months in order to ensure optimal healing. A contact lens is placed on the eye in the first week after surgery to reduce pain. Patients usually start seeing well after a week and the results are very good.
What is the next step after checking suitability for laser surgery?
After checking suitability, if you are suitable for laser surgery to remove glasses, you will receive a detailed explanation from Dr. Orwa Nasser about the surgery that suits you, the surgical procedure, the healing process, the chances of success, risks and complications. In addition, you will receive pre- and post-operative instructions from the center's nurse.
What are the procedures on the day of surgery?
Upon arrival at the Eye Center, you will be asked to provide your details at the reception desk. You will again undergo an eye examination by a qualified optometrist and a corneal scan. In addition, there will be another conversation with Dr. Nasser before the operation begins, and you will later be transferred to the operating room where the surgery will be performed. The surgery itself does not take long, and the preparation time is a few minutes for each eye and the laser treatment time is only a few seconds for each eye. At the end of the surgery, you will be transferred to the waiting room and then you will be released from the operating room with the doctor's approval after receiving a detailed explanation of how to use the drops after the operation. It is worth noting that your eyes will not be blindfolded and you can return home immediately after the operation.
Is the laser surgery painful?
The laser eyeglass removal methods performed by Dr. Orwa Nasser are among the most advanced methods, and in most cases there is no pain or suffering from the surgery itself, unlike what is known about laser surgeries. Of course, pain is a sensory experience and the feeling of pain varies from one person to another, but most patients who underwent surgery by Dr. Nasser did not feel any pain at all.
