Hyperopia
Farsightedness, or hyperopia, is a common eye condition that can cause blurred vision up close. People with farsightedness usually find it easier to see objects that are far away (at least 6 meters) and have difficulty focusing their eyes on near objects.
People with a high degree of farsightedness may suffer from blurred vision at all distances.
The shape of your eye determines whether you have a certain degree of farsightedness. Factors include the length of the eyeball and the curvature of the cornea. The shape of your eye affects how your eye receives and processes light to enable vision.
It is important to note that farsightedness is a common and correctable condition.
What are the symptoms of farsightedness?
- Blurred vision, especially when looking at things close to your face.
- Blurry vision/fatigue at night
- Difficulty reading.
- Double vision when reading.
- Dull pain in the eye.
- Adopt the eyes.
- Squinting eye while reading.
Farsighted children are said to have these symptoms, but also rub their eyes frequently or seem disinterested in reading.
What are the complications of this condition?
Farsightedness can cause uncomfortable symptoms such as headaches that make it difficult to perform daily tasks.
Children with high degrees of farsightedness may develop lazy eye or strabismus. Eye exams during childhood can detect refractive errors such as farsightedness before they lead to complications.
What causes farsightedness?
- Relatively short eyeball length
- Flatter cornea than expected
Can farsightedness be corrected?
Yes, it is possible to correct farsightedness by:
- Glasses: The lenses in eyeglasses provide a simple way to correct farsightedness. They do this by changing the way light is focused on the retina. The degree of farsightedness determines the type of lenses and how often they should be worn.
- Contact lenses: Contact lenses work like eyeglasses. They correct the way light bends as it enters the eye.
- Surgery to correct farsightedness: there are many different options based on the degree of farsightedness. For example, LASIK laser surgery helps people with lower degrees of farsightedness, so the laser reshapes the surface of the cornea. For people with higher degrees of farsightedness, the solution is to change refractive lenses. During this surgery, the natural lens is replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL) to correct vision.
Can farsightedness be prevented?
- There is no proven way to prevent farsightedness. Despite this, it is possible to maintain eye health through:
- Healthy diet: Nutrients such as vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E and lutein help protect vision.
- Periodic eye examinations: the doctor can detect eye problems before symptoms appear.
- Wearing sunglasses.
- Do not look at screens for a long time, because this may tire the eyes and lead to computer vision syndrome.
